Going on Vacation? Here's How to Prepare your Hot Tub Before you Go

By , June 3, 2015

Vacation season has arrived and taking the time to prepare your hot tub before you leave home can save you both time and money -- and give you peace of mind as well. It doesn’t take long to properly prepare your hot tub for your departure, simply performing regular maintenance, adjusting the temperature and securing your tub takes only a few minutes. Once complete, you can be sure that your hot tub will be clean and return to normal temperature when you get home.

 Temperature/energy

Turn the temperature down – but not too much. Keeping a consistent temperature is important if you want to conserve electricity and reduce your energy bill, but you don’t need to maintain your regular temperature while you are away. If you are going to be on vacation for a week or more, cut your hot tub temperature by about 15 degrees. This amount is just enough to save you some cash, but not so much that it will cost you a fortune to restore your tub to a comfortable temperature when you return. Never turn your hot tub temperature all the way down – reheating that whole tub of water will cost you a bundle when you get home.

Clean and purify, adjust

Test your water and make sure it is at the optimal pH before you leave home. If you use any kind of preventative, additive or chemical shock to clean your tub, you can add it before you leave to be sure you come home to an inviting and sparkling clean hot tub.

Cover

Take the time to securely latch or lock your hot tub cover to protect your hot tub while you are away. Creating a secure seal will prevent unneeded exposure to the elements and help prevent bacteria growth. Securing your tub also helps to insulate it, further reducing the amount of energy your spa uses while you are away from home. Properly securing your tub is a safety issue too -- latching the tub and locking the door or gate can prevent access by unwanted visitors of the two or four legged variety as well.
